Most of us had to pay the $20,000 to $60,000 to attend a culinary school like Culinary Institute of America or Scottsdale Culinary Institute. You were even taught to turn a radish into a little “flower” by carving it. And to turn a stick of butter into a dolphin. In addition to cooking many wonderful dishes.
Even before the economic downturn, there were 6 chefs applying for every job opening. Now it is 20 applicants for every job. So most culinary graduates were working in steakhouses. And ,even in fancy restaurants, chefs are not very well-treated. That has been true in the industry for 40 years. WHich is why every chef dreams of opening his own restaurant.
Yes, go to the U Akron and take the classes. You will learn a lot. And maybe you will be one of the lucky ones who carves out a career at a hotel or fancy dining establishment…. and is well-treated. Or maybe you will be brave and open your own restaurant while you are still in school. That will impress the professors.

I recently finished a culinary arts degree and am really glad I went to school. Before you make a decision get a job in a restaurant even if it is washing dishes or running food. A lot of students make the mistake of only checking out the school and not really spending any time deciding if the working environment of the kitchen is for them. Culinary jobs can be very rewarding and after some time you can make a good living at it. I would be cautious about taking out a lot of student loans to get a culinary degree, starting pay is usually low.
