Career in Restaurant Management?

30 May

I have finally figured out that I want to make a career in the culinary field. I am working on a degree in Business Management. Ive been working for Chili’s for a year as an Expo, and I want to continue in the industry.

Problem is, I have read various articles that working at a Chain is -NOT- really culinary. My ambition is to stay in the industry for a while. My manager’s are adamant about developing me in the program.

I’m afraid I’ll be caught in the cookie cutter Mickie Ds type of workforce.

I planned on utilizing Chili’s for the informational aspect. Is there really a future in this industry as a manager aside from a chain? Whats your opinion on chains?

HELP

Frustrated college student here… is a degree in “hospitality management” of much use for a chef?

14 May

I’ve been in college for nearly 3 years and I feel that it is just a waste of my time. So far I’ve been taking the general education requirements because I just declared my major to “hospitality management.” I wanted to know if this degree will help me at all in becoming a successful chef. I’ve looked up some famous chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Emeril Lagasse, and Bobby Flay and none (from wikipedia anyways) have a degree in regular college but just culinary schools (ie none of them have a hospitality degree). I have a scholarship so thats why I’m still in school, but am I just wasting my time? Should I drop out and go to culinary school ASAP? This is the toughest decision of my life. I would appreciate it if anyone in the culinary field would reply.

Final question Which college has the best curiculum for business or restaurant management?

13 May

I originally attended The Culinary Insitute of America in Hyde Park Ny and gotten my AOS but my major was culinary and minor management. I’m not looking to return to the CIA i love it but, no. I was told to look into Cornell University for management but wasn’t sure if it would have the best curiculums my most problematic situation is that it has to be a college that i could take Online courses. I want the best college but it also has to offer online classes my work schedule is only 4 days giving me 3 days to do a majority of my work

any serious answers will help grately

Is getting a Masters Degree in Management a good idea?

13 Apr

I have a BS in Biology degree that is collecting dust in my front hall closet. I got that degree to please other people in my family. Now at 28 I’ve decide to follow my real dreams and start my own business in the catering/restaurant business. I want to go to Culinary School but I’m a Army wife and will be living in Korea for at least three years. I’m thinking about taking class online at Argosy University for a MS in Management. The idea is to get the degree, get a job in the food industry, learn the business on their time, and pay off student loan debt until I’m ready to start my business. Argosy is an accredited school but I keep reading reviews saying it’s not worth it to get an online degree. That employer don’t like to hire people with online degree. And Argosy is just want your money. Plus it doesn’t help that I feel really pressured by the admissions rep. at Argosy. I guess my questions are: Is it really a good idea to get an online education? Is Argosy a good school? Is getting a MS in Management to vague like my degree in Biology was?

Culinary Management Schools in Chicago?

13 Apr

What is the best school in Chicago for culinary management.? I’m looking for culinary MANAGEMENT, not simply culinary arts. I’m looking for the trade school or university that will give me the best credentials, and thus the best job potentials to become a restaurant manager when completed. Are trade schools better or university-type schools?

I’m currently finding that, although I have management experience AND restaurant experience, I do not have management experience IN restaurants. Will a degree make a difference??
