How do you start a cafe with no money and no experience, but lots of passion and drive?

29 May

I am a great cook, I love cooking and I am always asked to cater a party. I would love to open up a cafe at the Marina in my home town, but I don’t have money and I don’t want to go into debt. I also do not know where to start doing research or how to write an effective business plan that’s simple. Please help me know where to begin and how to be successful rather than a mistake.
I do have a college degree, but not in culinary and I can’t afford culinary school although it is a dream.

Should I follow my passion and go to culinary school, or go to pre-med?

06 May

I LOVE to cook and bake, and everything else involving food.
BUT
At one point in my life, I wanted to become a plastic surgeon, which you have to go to pre-med for. In culinary school, it’s kind of taking a chance, cause about less than 1% actually are famous for cooking and actually make great money. But with being a surgeon, you are (kinda) guaranteed to make big money if you finish school and follow through… so what should I do? Do something that I love and have the possibility of not making the money i need. Or go to college for up to 12 years but be more guaranteed to make more money?
AH! help?

My passion is the Culinary Arts, but I have no clue what I need to do to prepare for a culinary school?

05 May

I’m currently a junior in High School, I want to attend a culinary school, (I’m looking at Art Institute but I’m open.) Is there anything I should do to prepare. It just seems like there is so little I can do, considering my school doesn’t offer a food science class.

liking food= passion= profession?

05 May

I was talking with my folks about food and they know that I love to watch the Food Network, like to try to cook and love to save recipes to try in my own spare time. They also know that I like to eat food, yet no I am not 200 lbs. no offense. My dad made the comment that since I like food so much and am interested in cooking and watching all those cooking shows maybe I should get a degree in that.I found that silly sine I am 23,have 1 Associates under my belt, almost done with the second, have 2 semesters left with my Bachelor’s and I am 23 so I think that I am way too old for culinary school.I mean my folks know that when I talk about food I know a lot of the language, techniques and such because of all the TV I watch yet because I also cook in my own time at the university I attend with my guyfriends.I find that silly,me going to culinary school and trying to graduate because I already feel like I am old.Yet when I saw the movie the “Bucket List” I started to make my own afterwards.
This is under my own “Bucket List” since I want to accomplish so much in life yet take so little for granted and yes I want to learn how to cook and make good meals and such yet I also want to work in a museum yet I also want to work as a biotechnologist.I know that I cannot have all three things yet it seems that I am good at history,Biotechnology which is my 2nd Associates from which I am so close to get it and now Culinary School?I know, everything at their time yet I also want to travel, get my Master’s in History, have a family, settle down and such before I am 30-that is the plan inside my head yet nothing goes as planned as most of you know.So what should I go after?I am going after History since I know I am so close and then my 2nd Associates, the Master’s follows and marriage as well as family whenever it happens. So will I regret putting this off or should I pursue it?

Are there any famous chefs that realized their passion in high school, rather than at a young age?

28 Apr

I’m looking to write a report on culinary arts, and someone close to me is being unreasonable with believing that every chef she see’s on tv is exactly like every chef that works in a kitchen, and every single chef out their realized their dream when they could walk.

I just need information on any well-known chef that didnt start his passion until high school or later. Any information could help.

Should i drop out of culinary school to pursue a career of a bigger passion, music?

03 Apr

ive almost finished my first year in culinary school at johnson and wales in charlotte, and am starting to realize the culinary industry might not be for me. long hours, stressful kitchens and little pay is not too appealing. my biggest passion in life is playing the guitar, and have considered majoring in music, but have already spent so much money and time at culinary school and dont know if music could offer me a reliable job. plus, i have no idea how to break it to my dad that i want to drop out. and on top of all this shit, i’ve met my girlfriend here who i might spend the rest of my life with; and dont know how to break it to her that i’d be leaving her and going to another college probably closer to home (alabama). its like im in the middle of making my girlfriend, my dad, and myself happy….. and helpful advice??
i don’t plan on being famous, just working in a studio or music recordings.
college is 20 thousand a year. thats why i’m hesitant about spending it if i don’t wanna be a chef. i’d have another year left

Careers: Money vs Passion?

18 Mar

Part I
If you had to choose between:
A.) a very marketable and profitable career that you enjoyed
B.) a career that you were absolutely passionate about, but would make 1/3 as much money at most

Which would you choose and why?

Part II
The reason I am asking is because I am in this position now. I am a Software Engineer with 8 years of experience, and I am making a comfortable 6-digit salary. I like my job and I’m good at it, but it’s not as dynamic and exciting as I would like it to be.

I have always had an incredible passion for cooking, so I thought it would be great to become a Professional Chef. I put myself through school working food service, and I am quite an accomplished cook. But, chefs have a very difficult time making what I would consider a comfortable salary and I would be starting at the bottom. I would still need culinary school also.

If you were in my position, what would you do, and why?

Should a person go to school for passion or business?

16 Mar

what I’m trying to debate is right now I work in a cubical doing software work. I barely get paid what I thought I would when going to school for this. I think I am going to school for business this time. I want to go to school for culinary arts even if I dont be rich or anything not like im getting it from computers but its definately not what everybody thinks, beleive it or not alot of competition is out there and alot of people go to school for computers, they don’t pay us as much as I thought is all I am saying. I also didn’t think I would be in a cubical like this. Anyway I’m going back to school I am 23 about to be 24 and sick of this. I’ve changed to 3 companies and been here for a year. IT’s boring, I just hate when people mislead other people of an education is everthing, When really you waisted so much money you could have saved and invested in stocks. Yet now I either want to go back for business for investing education,or culinary arts, which should i go?

Do you have a great passion for the culinary arts?

12 Mar

If so, why? I’m truely curious why people feel so driven and inspired by this particular art. Their passion is starting to rub off on me. I want to try to explore cooking now. :)
